A Digital Home for Your Holiday Cottage
When you step inside Dove Cottage, nestled on the banks of the River Dove beneath Shining Tor, you immediately feel its history. This former Victorian fishing lodge has been lovingly transformed into a tranquil retreat, where original character, quarry-tiled floors, two wood-burning stoves, views across the water to a historic mill sit beautifully alongside contemporary comfort. The cottage has welcomed countless guests over the years, each leaving with their own memories of riverside walks, cosy evenings by the fire, and the simple pleasure of waking to the sound of water flowing past the window.
I first visited Dove Cottage last year, not as a guest but as a photographer. The owners had commissioned me to capture the property for their Airbnb listing, and I spent a glorious day moving through the rooms, waiting for the light to hit just right, and framing those iconic views across the garden towards the river. Those photographs went on to serve the cottage well, helping it stand out in a crowded marketplace and attract guests from far and wide.
More recently, the owners and I began discussing another project. Not a new photoshoot this time, but something different: a website. Not a live site for taking bookings—they remain perfectly happy with their Airbnb presence, but a demonstration website to promote my website design services. A showcase piece. A way for me to demonstrate to other holiday cottage owners exactly what is possible when you combine professional photography with thoughtful, bespoke web design.
The result is the site you can explore here: placeaway.co.uk. It is a labour of love, a portfolio piece, and an invitation to other Peak District property owners who might be wondering whether their own online presence could do more.
Why a Demonstration Website Matters
For me, this project was about more than just building another website. It was about creating a template for what a holiday cottage site could be. Too often, beautiful properties are let down by dated design, clunky navigation, or a failure to convey the atmosphere that makes them special. Owners pour their hearts into restoring and maintaining their cottages, yet their online presence does not always reflect that care and attention.
By building a demonstration site for Dove Cottage, I wanted to show, not just tell, what is achievable. I wanted to create a resource I could point potential clients towards, one that allows them to see, feel, and experience the quality of work I can deliver. It bridges the gap between a portfolio of photographs and a finished, functional website.
The Foundation: Professional Photography
Of course, any project of this kind lives or dies by its imagery. Fortunately, I had the great advantage of having already spent time photographing Dove Cottage. I knew the light, I knew the angles, and I knew which details mattered most. The images we used in the demo site are the very ones that helped make the cottage a success on Airbnb—and they translate beautifully to a website format.
There is simply no substitute for professional photography when it comes to marketing a holiday cottage. It is the difference between a listing that blends in and one that stops the scroll. Great photography builds trust, creates desire, and gives potential guests confidence that what they see is what they will get. For this demo site, the images were the foundation upon which everything else was built.
Crafting the Experience: Words and Design
With the photography in place, the next step was weaving it together with words that felt right. I wanted the site to reflect the cottage itself: warm, inviting, and quietly luxurious. The tone needed to be descriptive without being flowery and informative without being overwhelming. Every page was crafted to guide visitors through the experience of a stay, from waking to the sound of the river to evenings gathered around the wood-burning stoves.
The design itself is clean, responsive, and built to load beautifully on any device. With the majority of travellers now booking on mobile, a seamless experience on phones and tablets is non-negotiable. Every gallery image, every detail about the Everhot range cooker or the rainfall shower, needs to be effortlessly accessible, whether someone is planning from their sofa or dreaming of their next escape from a café in town.
I also paid close attention to the practical information that guests value. The site includes a comprehensive FAQ section covering everything from mobile signal (limited, but WiFi calling is available) to dog policy (one well-behaved dog welcome downstairs by prior arrangement). It highlights nearby attractions like the village of Alstonefield, the hamlet of Milldale, and the bustling markets of Ashbourne. It gives a genuine flavour of what a stay at Dove Cottage would actually entail.
The Result: A Showcase for What’s Possible
The demonstration website for Dove Cottage, placeaway.co.uk, is now a project I am genuinely proud to share. It stands as a testament to what can be achieved when beautiful photography meets thoughtful design. It is not taking bookings, and it is not intended to replace the cottage’s successful Airbnb presence. Rather, it serves a different purpose entirely: it is an invitation to other holiday cottage owners to imagine what their own website could look like.
When potential clients ask me what I can do for them, I can now simply send them a link. They can explore the pages, read the content, browse the galleries, and get a real feel for my approach. They can see how their own property might be showcased, how their own story might be told.
Could Your Cottage Benefit from a New Digital Presence?
If you own a holiday cottage, a pub-with-rooms, or a glamping site in the Peak District and feel your online presence does not quite capture the magic of your real-world one, I would love to hear from you. Perhaps you rely entirely on listing sites and wonder about the benefits of having your own corner of the internet. Perhaps you have existing photographs that need weaving into a cohesive website. Or perhaps you know your property deserves better but are not sure where to start.
From bespoke WordPress design to ongoing hosting and support, I can create a digital home that works as hard as you do. I will take the time to understand your property, your guests, and your goals. I can photograph your cottage myself, ensuring a consistent vision from start to finish. And I will build you a site that not only looks beautiful but also actively helps to fill your calendar.
Get in touch, and let us tell your story. Whether your cottage is tucked away in a secluded dale like Dove Cottage, perched on a hillside with panoramic views, or nestled in a vibrant village square, there is a story waiting to be told. Let us tell it together.
